SAMIA: Hello, Salam, Shalom, Namaste, Sat Sri Akal, Holah, Aloha, Ciao and Bonjour! It's so good to be with you again today! And another reason I'm really happy today is because I have a very special guest -- LuAnn Hortsman, who is a brilliant mindset coach. I'm so excited to have you with us today LuAnn.
LuAnn: Oh, thank you so much for inviting me. I really appreciate it. I'm so excited to get to know you and be able to share with your audience.SAMIA: So, actually let's jump right into that, can you please tell me a little bit more about you, about your business?
LuAnn: Sure, sure! I am actually a retired nurse, I used to work in the Neonatal ICU Unit. And then after I had to retire because of a back injury... I had a back injury. I had surgeries that didn't work... I had to retire. So I was looking for something else that I could serve people with and I became a life coach. I love working on mindset because it's so important. I mean, eighty percent of our business is mindset, while only 20 is strategy. So it makes such a huge difference on our ability to show up well and visibly. So that's what I do. I do one-to-one coaching, and I do actually a hybrid where it has both of the one-to-one and a group portion to it.
...SAMIA: Awesome! And you know what you just said about mindset is eighty percent and the actual strategies of how and what to do are twenty percent, I'm so with you on that! So many people, I think, struggle with their businesses, and they find it not easy to do business, because they just don't get this... this reality that 80 percent of it is about having the right mindset, especially if you want your business to be fun and easy, which is definitely something that I want!
LuAnn: Oh sure, that's we want, to enjoy ourselves, that's part of life, right.SAMIA: Yeah, for sure, for sure, for me... cool! You mentioned that you were a nurse for 27 years and then you shifted into coaching. Was there something specific that inspired you to get into life coaching? How did you decide to do that after the time you were doing nursing?
LuAnn: It was just so... I was looking for some way to go... So I tried a couple other different businesses and it wasn't enough. I wanted to connect with people and actually help them with, you know, like probably their... how they think about themselves, and saw themselves. Because that's something I've struggled with for 25 years. And I finally figured out how to help people! So I'm going to share that with them.
SAMIA: Yay! That's awesome! And I know one thing about your business is, you have a specific tribe or niche of people that you love to work... But will you tell me more about who those people are that you love to work with the most?
LuAnn: Yeah, I like to work with women. They're like over 40, they already have an established business. But they're stuck in not being visible in their business because they're afraid to do video, or they don't feel like they're ready to move on. But a lot of times they are. They just have this mindset holding them back from their past... a past program that we get in our subconscious before we're seven, that a lot of people don't even realize they have it.
SAMIA: Yeah, oh my, that is... that's so true! And I'm so glad you're there to help these women. I'm not quite over 40 yet. But I can attest to how stressful it can get. Oh my gosh, okay. So how long have you been in business by the way with just coaching?
LuAnn: About a year.
SAMIA: Oh nice! So what's the, like the big vision that drives your work, or the big vision behind this coaching business that you have?
LuAnn: Well, I have two grown daughters, and four granddaughters, and a grandson. And all of them I want them to grow up knowing that they can accept themselves as they are, that they're lovable, and they're worthy, and they deserve all the good stuff out there. And I want all of them to feel that way. And you know I think that by changing the mindset of each woman, we can ripple effect down to the next generation and make a difference in our world... I mean by making an impact on just that self-esteem, that self-love, that self-acceptance, will be a huge difference for everybody.
SAMIA: Love that! Oh I'm so glad you're doing this, you're so right! I would... Oh, I love it. Can you, tell me a little bit more about what you do when you work with your clients? Like a specific program maybe that you offer, and that can help us get a better understanding of what you do and how you help people…? I'm so excited to learn more.
LuAnn: Well, my signature program is called "Living the Lioness Life." And the reason why I chose lioness was because she is a symbol of strength, bravery, courage, perseverance, persistence and cooperation. I think the cooperation to me is really important. Because a lot of women feel like they're in competition, and that they have to compare themselves to others, whereas by working together, and there's enough out there for everybody and by supporting each other, we raise each other up, don't we?
SAMIA: Yes, I love that. I love the.. love the lioness idea. Yeah, I'm a lioness for sure, yay! I love it, I love it! And what you highlighted about what it is about a lioness that's so important, that's just brilliant. Especially the part about how they work in cooperation... that, I think, a lot of women would connect with that just very naturally. So many of us... we, both I think... because so many of us are just naturally so nurturing… But also because of the way that we are raised and the expectations of society on us to play that sort of nurturing role, it comes very easily to us to work in cooperation with others, and so forth. And to be able to really see that as a point of strength that we have, that's really amazing.
LuAnn: I’m a really strong believer in that... you know, we need to be a community. You know, we need to protect our young, we need to protect each other. And just, you know, be able to trust each other, and to work together.
SAMIA: Yes, yeah. And I remember last time when we were talking, you were telling me about how there's five pillars to your program. Can you tell me more about what the five pillars are?
LuAnn: Sure! One of the pillars, the first one that we first concentrate on is the Mega Mindset Makeover. We makeover that mindset by...where's different techniques that we do privately, where we can actually look back in their past and see what's holding them back. There's different techniques I use with them to kind of go back into their past and so that they can see what was holding them back. Like, if there's experiences like when I was five years old, I had a teacher that tested me in kindergarten to see if I was ready for first grade. And when she did it, I could not say my ABC’s every time. I got to a certain point I'd start singing. And she said I could not pass to first grade because I didn't I say my ABC's without singing. And she had me do it over and over and over. And finally she took me out of the line of kids, put me in a corner so I could practice. And I just remember feeling so awful. It just broke my heart just to think that, okay, all these kids know that I'm stupid, you know? Basically I felt so dumb. And that's when I decided I needed to be perfect from now on. I'm never going to make a mistake again. And that's my perfectionist part of me that I've been, you know, struggling with all my life... is from that I believe, from that experience.
SAMIA: That's so... first of all thank you for sharing that. And that, you know, sometimes... I really work hard on not getting judgmental, and not, you know, giving into negative feelings because I'm, you know, focusing on being happy and cultivating peace and empathy and compassion. But when I hear about people mistreating children, I still have a hard time not getting angry at it. It's just they're so innocent, they're so young, they depend on us to protect them, to take care of them, and guide them. And so when things that we do as adults hurt them, I think there's something extra wrong about that, you know. And I'm so sorry you had to go through that. --
LuAnn: Yeah. Well, the powerful part of this though is that I was able to get over that.
SAMIA: Yes.
LuAnn: But a therapy that I went through with a coach, and we actually did a therapy where I went back in the past and I could comfort that little girl... and then I was able to forgive that teacher. And I don't have that, you know, that terrible feeling that I have to be perfect anymore because I was able to heal that child that was hurting back then. I was able to bring that forward to my day now. And so that mindset of that... I like to share it, because all of us have experiences from the past. It's more of a power story for me because you know I've healed that. I’ve moved on because I was able to heal that. So that is also part of this whole mega mindset makeover part... is that there's always things in our past that are causing us to doubt ourselves, to not be in how powerful we are, how worthy, how lovable, and you know, that we have these gifts that we need to share with everybody else.
SAMIA: Yes absolutely, absolutely! That's... thank you for that. It's so important for us to give this message that, you know, no matter what you may have experienced in terms of trauma that's in the past, and you know... to know that there is hope for healing, there is a way you can heal from that. The fact that you're still alive, you're still living, you survived through that trauma at that time, to me that's evidence that you, you know, you have this capacity to continue to live and survive. And not just survive, but to heal more and more, and get to a point of thriving in your life. Thank you for highlighting that LuAnn.
LuAnn: I just really feel strongly that so many of us need to heal our past.
SAMIA: Yes.
LuAnn: ...to get into our power now, to understand that we are wonderful people, we're awesome. We are awesome. So there's always... There always seems to be something in people's lives that keep them from wanting to be visitable. Do they feel like they're flawed, you know? Do they feel like there is something about them that's not lovable, or not worthy, or not deserving, of good things? So, if we can heal that stuff you can show up in your business with so much more power, you can share your message with a voice that actually, you know, everybody will hear.
SAMIA: That's awesome. I love that! And I also just, oh my gosh, keep finding more things that I love about what you share. When you talked about having experienced that healing yourself, and a part of that was that you were also able to forgive the teacher, you know... that is so beautiful. And you know, just makes me think about... now that I'm feeling more calm because I know you're okay, and getting more more into my empathy and compassion for the teacher... I'm like, you know, the teacher, she was probably doing her best too with what she knew and what she had. And we don't know what she might have been struggling with that day. Or, you know, whatever led her to engage with you in that way, she was still doing the best she could in that moment.
LuAnn: She was struggling with getting everybody through. But I believe a big part of it was that she was comparing me to my brother and my sister that were above me. And they had no problem with it, so why are you having a problem with this? So...
SAMIA: Yes, oh yeah... you know this kind of comparison... yeah, it's such a common part of how we treat each other and we treat ourselves, where we're comparing ourselves to other people, we're comparing other people to other people. We do this with children all the time. We compare some children with other children... and generally, it's a very unhelpful thing to do. But it's not the fault of any particular individual. It's just such a dominant part of how the culture in general works, that it really takes a lot of awareness and retraining our mind, our hearts, just to do things in a different way and stop comparing.
LuAnn: And I think it's very human to compare. I think that our bodies naturally, our brain, puts things in patterns. They/it has to sort in a certain way. So I think that's part of our whole way we're made. But it's not helpful for children to compare with their siblings.
SAMIA: Exactly! And yeah, exactly, there are some things that are very helpful to compare. And I agree with you, our brain’s just naturally wired to do things that way. And we can always learn better ways to do things, you know. It's just like you, know you... it's natural for us to feel angry in certain situations. And we can learn better ways to manage our anger and respond to the anger when we feel it. We don't want to just necessarily go and react with anger, you know, in terms of violence, or you know this or that, which for many people, that's the only thing that they can think of in the moment. So there are so many things that, you know, we experience, and they're natural, and at the same time, you know it's like, okay, we need to learn better ways to manage that.
LuAnn: A lot of hurtful things come out of our mouth when we're angry.
SAMIA: Yeah.
LuAnn: How can we feel the anger without hurting somebody else? Because you don’t want to push down emotions, because they're going to come up one way or another. So if you are able to express it in a different way, maybe in a more physical way -- punch a bag, or go for a walk, or you know, some other way of dealing with the anger... not to push it down, but to not let go and actually hurt somebody else.
SAMIA: Yes, exactly. That's awesome! Oh, by the way, this makes me think about... didn't you share with me that you're writing a book?
LuAnn: I am, I am :). It's actually called, "Shift Your Shit".
SAMIA: I love it!
LuAnn: Yeah, I mean that's what it is. It's like the crap that we build up in our subconsciousness that holds us back. So it basically is a system that I teach people on how to remove those blocks that are holding them back. And they shift that story they tell themselves, that underlying story of, I'm not enough, I am not lovable, I don't deserve good things. And so they could be the badass business owner that they want to be.
SAMIA: I love it! I totally, absolutely love it! Hey, can people get your book now? Can they pre-order it? It's launched already? Can they buy it? What can people do to get their hands on your book?
LuAnn: Actually, I am in the midst of writing it. It will be ready in the next couple weeks. So I'm gonna be uploading it on Kindle. And they can email me at LuAnn@boldly… that's the name of my business, BoldlyVisibleYou.com. So if they just email me at LuAnn@BoldyVisibleYou.com, I'll put them on the waiting list, and I'll send them a copy.
SAMIA: And we'll make sure to include your email in the show notes. And for the people who are watching this on video, you'll be seeing this, LuAnn@BoldyVisibleYou.com, on your screen right now in the subtitles. All right, so exciting! Okay, so tell me more! So we just talked about the first pillar of your program, what's the second pillar?
LuAnn: The second one is, Unpack the 4 Essential S's. They're: Self-worth, Self-love, Self-talk, and Self-confidence. These are all so important. Because, I mean, the self-worth, you got to build on first. You have to know in your heart that you're worthy. And then you learn to love yourself, and treat yourself with love, with self-care, whatever you need to do. And use your words to support yourself and uplift yourself instead of tear yourself down with your self-talk. And then finally after you get all those things established, you have the self-confidence to go out in your business, get on video... Because that is so powerful right now. Everybody's on video. And a lot of people don't feel comfortable doing it. So by unpacking these 4 S's, they are able to go out there and do video.
SAMIA: Yay! I love that. Can you give us a little taste of... so in the process of unpacking the 4 S's... for example, if you think about unpacking self-worth, what does that involve... like what are some of the challenges that lower people's self-worth? How can we raise it? Just give us a little taste.
LuAnn: All right. Well, a lot of the self-worth comes from our past... that/those... when we are building our subconscious between one and seven. Our subconscious is building all the memories... It's basically like you're being hypnotized at that time. That's where your brain wave is. And everything is just absorbed without a filter. And it's basically like downloading off the internet without a, you know, a filter to keep out both the bugs and the viruses and stuff. So basically they're taking everything in, everything in, without any filter. So some things we brought into our lives are not helpful stuff. It's not necessarily that somebody did something wrong to you. Sometimes you misinterpret it because you're seeing it from a child's point of view. That's a big one, all right. It's all... a lot of it's from our childhood... Maybe a parent was distant with you, or they said something hurtful to you that you remember… especially if it's associated with a strong feeling, that's cemented in your brain, and it affects your behavior now. But there's a difference with... you know people always put self-worth and self-esteem together, and... it’s kind of interesting... but they're different, they're different.
SAMIA: How are they different?
LuAnn: Self-worth is more of an inside thing. That's loving yourself. The only way to change that is to look back, at the future... at the past, and heal their past. And then they can move on, and let go of the past, and go forward, and know that they can love themselves. Whereas self-esteem takes an action... you have to do something new. You're actually showing yourself that you can do it basically. And then you build your self-esteem through that. So they're totally different things. But it's so important for them to have both in place.
SAMIA: Of course, I can see that... and thank you for making that distinction. That's really helpful. Just to keep, just to keep... make sure that we get to hear from you about all the five pillars and we don't have to run out of time... can you tell me more about the third pillar, what's the third pillar?
LuAnn: The pillar three, it's, Boldly Visibility Booster. So it's basically that whole thing about getting on video after you've built these 4 S's into your life you can go ahead and show up on video. So we actually go over... how do you do video? How do you do video on Facebook? How do you do video on Instagram? How do you do a video for a podcast or a YouTube? How do you show up... how do you... what materials to use, what/how to actually do it with confidence... How do you plan it out? We go through all of that so that they know that the content is helpful. It gives them a lot of confidence when they bring it out there. So basically pillar 3, we're practicing doing live video.
SAMIA: Awesome! I love that. It's like, first you work on your mindset and clean out all of that shit holding you back, and you build yourself up some more by unpacking the 4 S's, and then you can get to some of the strategy stuff, that's wonderful. So what's pillar four and pillar five?
LuAnn: Pillar four is Remarkable Relationships and Beneficial Boundaries. Because a lot of us are people pleasers. A lot of us don't prioritize our business. So it doesn't get, it doesn't build, because we don't hold on to our boundaries. Like I know I always used to be an over giver. I used to give, and give, and give. And I was trying to fill a hole in my heart... the hole that I did not feel enough, that I was trying to fill it by giving and giving and giving, and not being comfortable receiving. So that's one of the things that we work on, is trying to do that, and that makes your relationship so much better. It just makes you able to stick up for yourself, talk to/with powerful communication, and share your needs and your wants.
SAMIA: Awesome! It's so amazing. And I know one of the most important lessons I've learned as a business person myself is that really a successful business requires having successful relationships. You can't do business as/like a sole, isolated, alone, person... you can't, you just can't. If you're going to have a successful business you're going to have to build lots and lots and lots of healthy, beneficial relationships. Whether it's with your clients, whether it's with, you know, other people that you need to work with on the business side of, you know, managing your business and growing your business, whether it's with your family, because you know, if there's drama going on in your family... how are you going to focus on your business? You know, all of that kind of stuff... So this is so important. I'm so glad that you have included this as one of the pillars in your program. That's awesome!
LuAnn: When you want to get like help for something, or take a course or something like that, you have to communicate that right to your partner.
SAMIA: Yes.
LuAnn: You don't go and ask permission. You need to ask for support. And the way you find yourself in your body language, in your voice tone, and you're looking them in the eye... all those things make a difference.
SAMIA: Yeah, oh, that's wonderful! Thank you, thank you for sharing that. That is so true. I love what you just said about... you ask for support, not permission.... brilliant, awesome! So what's pillar five?
LuAnn: Pillar five is Discover Your True Life Purpose. To kind of align your...what you're doing in your coaching or your whatever business you belong to, with the gifts that you are given. Because all of us are born with gifts. We have an innate worthiness, of that, you know, we're given gifts to use. And then we have a message. What is your message? You know, that's what we kind of tackle in pillar five, is... what is your... is your business aligned with your life? Do you feel like you are working in with your gifts? Are you in your genius zone? Or are you doing something... and just playing small?
SAMIA: Right, again, I love it! Because if you're going to make change fun and easy, if we're going to make business fun and easy, if you're going to have more happiness in our lives... It's so important that we feel in alignment with our life purpose, that we are using our strengths, that we, as much as possible, are working in ways that are within, as you said, within our zone of genius... that is absolutely absolutely necessary. So thank you again so much for sharing all of this with us. I'm so happy. How can people, like, get more of you? So, if someone was like... is there... if someone wants to start working with you, or learn a little bit more from you, what's the best way they can do that now?
LuAnn: Well, I actually have a free master class coming up, October 20th. So that would be the best time to get to know me a little bit better... We're actually going to go over this whole piece of doing video, planning a video… We're going to kind of break the surface of how you can show up confidently to your audience and plan your videos so that you can get out there and do a Facebook live. So it's kind of a working master class where you can actually start implementing some of the steps.
SAMIA: Oh, I love that idea. Okay, cool. So should... do you want to give them any specific link or website that they can click on? We will of course include it in the show notes. But if you just want to mention it out loud now it's all good. Otherwise just look in the show notes people.
LuAnn: I do have a pretty link for this one... it's rebrand.ly/mc-align-your-marketing
SAMIA: Okay, so you'll be able to see it in the subtitles if you're watching the video version of this. And if you're just listening to it, don't worry, this link is in your show notes. So just click the link. That'll be very, very, easy. Awesome! Thank you so much LuAnn. Anything else that you want to share with us right now?
LuAnn: Well, one thing is that you know if you're aligned with your purpose it is, it's fun and easy. If you're feeling like you're struggling with something, there's something that needs to be worked on. And well there if you guys want to have help with that, I actually have a free coaching thing I offer, so check me out.
SAMIA: Please do connect with LuAnn. Connect with me. Connect with anyone else that you feel a calling to connect with you know for that matter... you know, when you're struggling with something I'm a big believer in asking for help now. For years you know I struggled to ask for help. I wouldn't ask for help even when I really needed it. And it made my life so much more difficult. And now I just love asking for help. So I encourage you to do the same.
LuAnn: I love it!
SAMIA: Yay, awesome! Okay, so I think we're wrapping up for today and once again, thank you so much LuAnn. Thank you for sharing all your wisdom, your brilliance. And I encourage everyone who's listening, watching, to connect with LuAnn and benefit from her brilliance and her wisdom. And we'll see you again soon. Take good care, bye :).
